Just wondering which type of system most people prefer. Loud, or clear?

I didn't vote since there wasn't a choice saying "Using the factory system, and it sounds great."

Most people are going for the SQL routine, a clear and accurate midbass, mid and high end with some good thump on the low end.

it takes time to train an ear for listening to detail. The factory system in my accord was pretty good too though.

What's the best way to do that? i think I have a pretty good ear, but I'd like to get better.

I don't care for subwoofers in cars. They just sound like crap, no matter what you do. I am sure it has something to do with the subwoofers wave length being longer than the car.
Anyhow, I also don't go overboard trying to make it sound like a high end Hi-Fi system as well. You're in a car and you have to contend with all sorts of noises, there just isn't a point.
I try to find a medium. I think that the majority of stock systems are crap. I would replace everything with some higher quality components. Since the car is already a great speaker box on it's own no need for adding weight with amps, subs, and separate battery systems.
I save that for the home setup. No question though, sound quality is FAR more important to me than SPL.

Just like you would if you were auditioning components for a home system. You just have to listen to them and see what sounds best to you. Sound quality is VERY subjective and varies from person to person.

most sub(s) in most cars sound like crap because ....
1) the car rattles like a mofo when you play it at even fairly loud levels
2) the box is poorly matched to sub (like prefabs)
3) the box/sub is not installed in a good location, and the rattles give away the subs location
4) the output level of the subs is poorly matched in volume to the rest of the system
5) all too many subs are SPL oriented (at the expense of sound quality)
etc, etc ..

i help build 155+ db vehicles and when making them we keep sq in mind you can hear everyword the sound production is perfect and the subs pic up from about 65hz and down

there is very little "music" below 50 Hz, so subs won't really effect the sound quality too much unless they overpower the mid/tweets
dbfreak147.5

when the subs have 3000 watts and the mids have 75 it gets difficult to hear the mids

id say sound quality. i like my system to get pretty loud but not painfully loud. as for subs in cars well imo if your system is well matched and you configure everything properly it can sound beautiful theres just more work than wiring a sub and stuffing it into a box somewhere.

Hey man that's what I'm talking about. Sound quality to me is the MOST important thing, but man I love hearing my mids and highs get louder and my subs to keep digging deeper. And I only listen to Metal nothing else.

SQ. The whole point of having a sound system is to listen to real music. Not a synthesized bass note and someone yelling about how rich they are.

what do you guys think of the mach system in the mustangs?
I heard one the other day and it wasn't bad, I didn't really get to test it, I was on a test drive and turned it up for a minute, didn't want to push it since it wasn't my car.

most factory systems have decent iaging and tonal balance these days. Problem is they have little real bass or high freq, and volume is limited

I love earth moving low end bass :D but you have to have the highs and mids to back it up. So a good mix is always needed, but i dont see anything wrong with daily listing at 14x.x + db :D
