95 1.3 Auto trans question

I have a 95 metro 1.3 with auto trans. It is starting to not want to shift without letting off on the gas a little. then it will shift. the fluid level looks good, and it doesn't looked burnt. Does this sound like a internal problem, or something else. Thanks for any help on this.

Check your TPS.

Sounds to me like you need to adjust your Throttle Valve cable. I'll try to post back with more detail soon.

Since this is an electronic transmission (although somewhat of a crude one compared to the latest transmissions on the market) all the TV cable does is to operate the throttle valve inside the valve body. This causes the line pressure to rise under high throttle conditions to prevent slip during shifts.

In older hydraulic only transmissions this would have been a valid thing to check but here the shifts are only controlled by the TCM/ECM.

Did you do something like the following to check the transaxle fluid level?

0. Drive car for 15 minutes at speeds at least 40 mph. (Fluid will be between 158 and 175 deg. F.)
1. Place vehicle on a level surface.
2. Apply parking brake and block vehicle wheels.
3. With selector level in "P" position, start engine. DO NOT race engine.
4. Run engine at idle and move selector lever through each range and return to the "P" position.
5. With engine running at idle, remove fluid level indicator from the filler tube and wipe indicator off.
6. Reinsert fluid level indicator into filler tube making sure it is seated in its original position.
7. Remove the indicator and check the fuild level The level should be between the "FULL HOT" and "LOW HOT" marks. If the level is below the "LOW HOT" mark, add fluid to bring the level to the "FULL HOT" mark. Bringing the fuild level from the "LOW HOT" mark to the "FULL HOT" mark requires 0.3 liters (0.3 qts) of fuild. Use Dextron-III automatic transimition fuild GM P/N 12341643 or equivalent.

Interesting note: there is also a description for "room temperature" fluid level check, but it's for after draining and refilling the fluid for fluid replacement after doing work on the transaxle. Maybe is a first step, and not as reliable as the warm engine/transaxle way of measuring it.

Here's instructions from my '95 OEM repair manual for: TV CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

INSPECT
- accelerator cable for play and adjust if necessary. (Directions elsewhere in manual.)
1. Start engine and let idle until normal operating temperature has been reached.
2. Remove TV cable adjustment cover (the shroud around the end of the cable).

MEASURE
- TV cable boot-to-inner cable stopper clearance with a feeler gage. If clearance is more than 0.5 mm (0.02-inch), adjust TV cable.

ADJUST
3. TV cable boot-to-inner cable stopper clearance by turning TV cable adjustment nuts until a clarance of 0.5 mm has been reached. The accelerator cable adjustment nuts may also be used to adjust TV cable boot-to-inner cable stopper clearnace if further adjustment on TV cable adjustment nuts is not available.
