Jetta Refrigerant Recharge: Please Help

Hello, I am new here. I just bought a 1996 Jetta GLS and learned the air conditioning isn't working. I suspect the owner never bothered to recharge the refrigerant but that it still works, because the car resided in a cool climate since 2001.

To test the theory, I bought a recharge kit and refrigerant, only to learn that I can't find the low pressure port. I do see two black caps attached to metal hoses in the engine compartment directly in front of the passenger side dashboard. Might one of these be the low pressure port?

I would really appreciate some direction, and possibly a photo, if it isn't too much to ask.

Thank you, Emily

I'm only familiar with up to 92, but on that style there is a LP connection right in front of the compressor. Trace your lines, if it's after the condenser and before the compressor, it's low pressure. If it's after the compressor and before the thermal expansion valve (or evaporator) it's high pressure.

hes right it will only fit on one port, usually located closes to the hoses that lead to the firewall which is the heater core hoses

well, newer audis for example have them totally seperate places.

The safer way of remembering them is that you always fill in the smallest nipple..or was it the largest..uh oh
