I've got the service manual but it's not to helpful in decoding this body id plate from my '87 Caprice. Anybody know a link to a site which I could reference this too? I googled everything I could think of with no luck.

What are you wanting to learn from it?
All that's going to show are paint codes and body style (in your case, a two door sedan (1BN47)).
If you're looking for more than that, under the decklid is a label that says "Service Parts Identification - DO NOT REMOVE". This is what has information pertaining to various options on your car. PS the paint codes will show up on that as well.

that's what I'm looking for, what color was the car, etc. I'll check the trunk for the other. So this plate pictured, I looked in my service manual and it says what all the designated numbers refer to but doesn't say what specific numbers or letters mean. For instance it'll say "this letter in this position signifies where the car was built" but then it doesn't have a list of letters and their respective build locations. That's the kind of info I'm looking for, basically what does each of the numbers and letters on this body id plate equal out to.

There's nothing that's all-inclusive (that I've found yet, anyway), but a fairly complete listing can be found here. (http://www.capriceclassic.com/spids.html)

lol, and thats only semi-complete
Actually, i decoded my RPO/SEO plate, and there are a few errors and a few missing codes.
it tells me that my car is supposed to be blue...
its not.
still interesting though

I decoded the service parts id tag in the trunk and that told me a lot of the stuff that's on the body plate. I decoded it at the parts department at a Chevy dealership but the database was missing about 5 or 6 of the codes and a few of them came up as different years (maybe they recycled the codes I don't know)
