I had Crest once at a post-race picnic. 10.5% or something. I'm told that piss tastes similar.

Before the popularisation of tea and coffee (which necessitate the boiling of water and thereby removing organisms found in water supplies), beer or ale was the beverage of choice for most Europeans ie a pint of ale was consumed with breakfast. (indeed some theorise that it was coffee and tea that brought about the renaissance as folk became more alert and clear-thinking with the stimulation of caffeine and the reduction in the effect of alcohol on minds).
Beer is usually made by two main methods of fermentation:
Lager Fermentation or bottom fermentation uses a yeast called Saccharomyces uvarum, formerly known as Saccharomyces carlsbergensis. Fermentation occurs at the bottom of the vessel Pilsners, Dortmunders, Märzen, Bocks ie most lager type beers
Ale Fementation or top fermentation Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Fermentation occurs upon the top of the vessel – this type is used for brewing ales, porters, stouts, Altbier, Kölsch, and wheat beers (or weiss-bier).
Most beer consumed in the US, Canada, NZ and Australia tends to use lager fermentation. Lager type beers are generally consumed chilled whereas ale or top fermentation beers are traditionally served at a slightly warmer temperature particularly beers such as porter.
The beer market in NZ and Australia is characterised by a shrinking market size and strong segmentation - it's a fight to capture more of a shrinking market as opposed to selling more beer. The bulk of the beer is produced by two producers in each country with Lion (which itself is majority owned by Kirin Breweries of Japan) owning the Castlemaine, Tooheys labels in Australia and the Steinlager, Lion, Waikato, Speights, Macs Gold brands in NZ. It also manufactures the premium lager Stella Artois under licence. The other major brewer in NZ is DB which produces Heineken under licence, DB Export Gold, Flame Beer, DB and the Monteith’s range of beers.
In Australia, the major competition for Lion is Carlton and United Breweries which produces Fosters (mainly for export), Carlton, Hahn, Victoria Bitter and Crown Lager.
Bulk tap beer was traditionally brown beer, fairly sweet lager fermented beer eg Tooheys New and Old, Castlemaine, Swan, Victoria Bitter in Australia and Lion Red, DB Draught, Waikato, Canterbury and Speights. However, this has shifted to lager as well.
Segmentation is very strong for example in NZ, DB strongly markets DB Export Gold ‘as a ticket to adventure’ portraying a youthful, sport, adventurous brand identity, it markets Heineken as a premium European-style lager for the discerning (even though it’s sold in bulk but always in bottles and rarely in cans), Flame Beer is sold as a ‘session beer’ ie for those who want to sit down and get drunk, DB Draught is sold as ‘everyman’s beer.’ The 'hopper' beers which are less carbonated are being pitched as an alternative to RTD's (Ready to Drink alcoholic drinks) - the reduced carbonation is supposed to reduce the bloaty feeling from beer with the fruit flavoring supposedly to appeal to younger and more female consumers...
Myself, I prefer drinking imported premium beers eg Crown, Kronenbourg 1664, Leffe Blonde, Kirin Ichiban, Labatt’s, Molson’s Canadian, Asahi and Sapporo would be my favourite lagers. I enjoy Caffrey’s when I can find it – I have to admit I don’t really like any of the US Beers at all.
And if you're wondering I used to assist in the research of beer in my last job - something which my mates were regularly roped into for 'sensory' testing (drinking beer and telling us what they though of it - and damn... I even paid them to do it!)
