Transmission Temp Gauge

I am looking to install a transmission temperature gauge on my 2004 Chevy Silverado, Vortec 5300. I just purchased a travel trailer and would like this. What is everyones ideas and hints. Can i do it on my own, or should i have the local dealership install one.

Any help with be greatly appreciated.

There is already a transmission temperature sensor on the truck. It reports to the PCM. If you can break into the serial bus, you can get the data. You may also be able to tap into the wire harness, but would need a high impedance input to your instrument so that the temperature indication to the PCM does not get skewed by the addition of the instrument.

I tapped into the transmission cooler line with a conventional temp. guage. It seems to work well.

Get a drain plug kit from parts house. Locate into the tranny pan, where it can't interfere with internal parts. Usually, about 1/2 way up on the side of the pan. Loctite the plug nut/bolt into pan. Then you just screw your pipe tap sensor into the drain plug hole. The pan has to be taken off to do this. You really get the best average/accurate reading from sensor being in the sump area.

I have an interceptor gauge that reads trans temp along with 15 other engine paraeters, as well as reading and clearing codes... it plugs into the obdII

Be sure to get one of those cool gauge pods that mounts on the a-pillar (eye level, just to driver's left). Looks factory with no butchering.

I want to put a trans temp gauge and a 2 1/16" 5,000 rpm mini tachometer in my truck, but haven't found a pod for my '73-style '90 Suburban.
