2003 Ford Explorer with 58,332 appears in good condition. Is this a smart buy? I hear Explorer's have bad transmissons? Is this true?

If the price is right and the Explorer seems to have been well-maintained, this would probably be a good buy.
Since you don't want to waste your money, probably the best investment you could make would be to find a local shop that you trust (or ask around and find one that friends/co-workers trust) and pay the shop to check it out for a potential purchase. This will probably cost you less around $100, but could save you thousands in the long run.

If you decide to buy, ask the owner if they had the tranny flushed. If not I would probably get one done soon.
