I can't say that the seatbelts would have helped at that speed, other than attaching the people more securely to the larger, blacker piece of wreckage.
I'm fairly certain they weren't worn, however, because on the shirtless man abrasions and bruises would be evident. These minor scrapes/bruises/broken ribs are very common in even lower-speed crashes but are preferable to being ejected from the vehicle into a guardrail. Also something seen very frequently in SUV rollovers is that a person will be fully or partially ejected from the vehicle, which then rolls over the top of them.

This is actually a few years old. If I remember correctly, the Ferrari was racing a Corvette. As you can see, both drivers died. The Vette driver was ejected, but ended up more intact. The Ferrari was torn to shreads, and the driver with it. Seatbelt wouldn't have made any difference.
A person would be extremely lucky to survive a crash at that speed in anything short of a tank. In a light, thin, high powered sports car, your chances are next to nothing.
BTW, there should be more of a disclaimer than "ugly" on those pics. They're horrifically graphic. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be posted. It's good to show people just what can happen out there. It just needs more of a warning. Those kinds of pics can make someone physically ill.

In a tank you'd just rattle around like a marble in a tin can. I don't think you'd fare much better - the safest thing in a wreck is for the car to absorb the impact so the passengers don't.
Maybe you could survive the wreck if you were encased in a huge roll of foam.

thats pretty bad, I havent seen anyone fucked up like that in a long time...
Seat belts would defentally help, theres alot missing here, like how it happened, that kind of a crash takes alot...more than just speeding like that ie impact with something that didnt budge.

IIRC, and it's been a long time, the crash basically resulted from a chain reaction that included at least one car (a Volvo, I think... it's driver also killed) travelling in the opposite direction, lots of guard rails, and a tree (or something else large and stationary).
As far as the tank... yeah it wouldn't absorb impact as well.... but it would also take a lot more to stop or affect the momentum of a tank moving at that speed than either of those sports cars.

If it were a friend or relative I would be angry at them first and foremost for driving 170 mph on a public road. I personally think that this is a valuable reminder to keep our speed in check and save that kind of behaviour for the track. We have a large number of members who need to learn this lesson, and unfortunately, some will undoubtedly learn it the hard way.
Additionally, no one on automotiveforums.com posted the photos on the internet. They merely found the site the photos were posted on and provided a link to it.

First, most cars here cant go that fast...
also, its why modern cars have mandatory speed limitors, because after 127 your odds of survival go to %0
I've seen worse than these corpses, I also did alot of work studying wars.
I can see both views, I can see where it shouldnt be posted, afterall, we dont need more kids with an upbringing like mine, i'm desensitised to where I -could- stick a gun into my mouth and not flinch...drive my car 120mph in a 25 zone, slam my head into a door to open it, watch someone get shot etc *yes, EXTREME examples but I'm making a point*
Whereas, perhaps people in the street racing fourm could use these pics, many racers i've met have never seen the possable conquences of their racing, and many think that they cant get hurt because they wear their seatbelt, and thats all they need...granted if it was a 4 or 5 point with roll bars around the seat...then yah, that would be enough but these are cars made for speed and to take a crash. *dont know of the Farrari* But at 170, it dosent matter really, you die, yes you might get lucky but the extreme ammount of force mixed with the sudden stop...well...the seat belt could cut your head off from the shoulder to your underarm....i've seen it.
All in all, it was posted, and in this fourm I think it can help more than hurt. I used it already to beat some sence into one racer who takes too many risks.

I've said this before. If you're going to street race, make sure its a place you know, and make sure its relatively safe. IE, no trees surrounding, no light poles, nothing for you to wrap your car around if you lose control. And no damn pot holes. It also has to be unpopulated, for example, no bikers/joggers typically ride or run around the area.
If you don't have a place like that around your town, man go to the track it ain't worth dying over.

Yeah, Courtenay's great for that... we've got Ryan hill, which is about 1 mile from top to bottom... great for burning rice, it's amazing to see the looks on their face as an aerostar slowly pulls on them... We've got the roads out past the highschool, which are just unbelievable. Flat, straight, and long. After those roads, you get to old country twisties, but not just any twisties... they put a highway connecter through, but none of the residents would let them go through their property. The result highway grade paving, with unbelievable complexes of corners
If you want real high speed, at the top of ryan hill is about 2-3 miles of good road up till the lights at anderton, which is another great road. The downside is the visibility isn't good enough to really go at it.

Just for the people critisizing them for racing where they did, the crash took place on the autobahn. Does anybody remember the really bad viper crash posted here awhile back? That was on the same stretch of the road.

No, he wasn't racing a Corvette. That was a different ferrari. I've got the video of those two here, I'll try to post it up sometime soon.
As for the decapitated body with the guts hanging out and the rain to the side... Good lord. I was eating my lunch when I saw that. Personally, I think it's good that people see it. While mot of us could probably not go that fast, it is still a eye-opener to the extremity of what can happen when you're stupid.
A friend of mine up in KC died kind of like that. He hit a pothole and his car dissentigrated at 114 MPH. They were picking up large chunks of the car for 1.5 miles. The smaller pieces were scattered across all 5 lanes (center turn lane) and in alleyways between the buildings. He destroyed cars along the sides, business establishments and put a few people in the hospital in critical condition. Luckily (and I say that in the worst sense of the word) no one else was killed aside from him.
At least be careful.

It's reasons like this that, come next spring, my team is going to head down to Nelson's Ledges Sports Car Course and pick up SCCA club membership. None of us want to go out like that. Yeah, we stick to the backroads and rarely get up over 100, but that doesn't erase the wacked out variables that can happen. So, really, we're taking it to the track. Dusting ricers isn't worth becoming a human puddle.

I believe that's a guy, and the clothes got pulled askew while he/she was sliding across the pavement.
Octagon: Glad to see someone here track races - good luck. :)
About the accident having occured on the autobahn: Just because high speeds are legal doesn't mean they're appropriate.
Quite often when I suggest people take their street racing to the track, they seem to get offended. "I'm in control of my car." "I can handle the speeds I drive." Well, I don't doubt you can. However, the problem with public roads is that there are so many variables. Around the next bend, who knows what you'll find? A fallen tree, a pothole, a stopped auto, a couch, someone driving the wrong way on the interstate, a gasoline container, a washing machine carton. It would be difficult enough to avoid any of these obstacles while going the maximum legal speed, let alone 110 or 120. As mentioned by Cyprus106, a pothole can severely affect a car travelling at a high rate of speed. My dad once had a blowout caused by running over a small (.5") triangular, pointy rock hitting at the edge of the tread. It was his front passenger tire that blew, and fortunately, the sidewalls blew out but the tread remained intact, so the rim wasn't riding on bare pavement. Had he been speeding, it's very likely he would have lost control of the car.
Finally, thanks to inertia, every time you double your speed, you quadruple your stopping distance. For examle, a car that stops from 60-0 in only 120 feet (which is far, far below the average 140) takes a full 190 feet to stop from 70-0. That's a 10mph difference that ads more than 50% more stopping distance.
What's the difference between, say, 30 and 35 mph? Well, if you were going 30, and a child jumped out in front of your car 32 feet ahead of you, you'd JUST be able to stop the car in time before hitting them (assuming optimum braking conditions). IF you were going 35, you would still be traveling at 18 mph when you passed the spot the child was standing. 18mph is plenty fast to kill a pedestrian. This is because deceleration is not linear, in fact it is exponential.
Finally I would like to leave you with a sad story of my own. My dad's friend's mother was killed a few years back by a 18-yr-old male driver. She was backing out of her driveway on a country road (spd limit 50) when around the bend came a young man in a sports car, going 75. He realized that if he slammed on the brakes, he would definitely hit her, but if he accelerated he MIGHT be able to squeeze by. He was going near 100 when he impacted the car, collapsing the driver's and passenger's doors together and plastering the elderly woman across the inside. She basically exploded. Had he braked, there would have been a collision, but it would have been far more minor. He was injured in the wreck (broken ribs and such) but survived to be convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
Lesson: When in doubt, it's better to definitely have a slow accident than to MAYBE have a fast accident.

i've seen worse pictures too..but still they are disturbing that that is on a PUBLIC road..i mean if it was on a track and he spun out and hit a wall that would be different...but to post that on the internet would wake some people up..imean just be sensible about what you do when you race...for all we know there could have been something else involved...stay safe out there...im not condeming racing because i see nothing wrong with it..just do it safe

Lesson: When in doubt, it's better to definitely have a slow accident than to MAYBE have a fast accident.
well i know these poits of braking and itīs good to see that someone else nows them.
some people may say know oh my god thatīs horible what happened there and i donīt want it happen to me so i make a driving training... how long?
half a day?
1 day?
1 week?
you think you can handle your car after 1 week of special training?
you think you can control your car at a speed of 200 or more kmh?...
myself i like driving fast..i go more than 200 every day.. but itīs not ok even if you have driven the road 100 times... so many factores that can happen... well itīs ok when you take a ride on sunday morning with NO traffic on empty wide roads...
when you want to go fast donīt drive fast in cities... can you imagine how your life will be when you hit a pedestrian and he dies?
go fast on speedways and care! there are others arround you....

uum, in all honesty, if you haven't seen the pictures you really shouldn't joke about it. In fact. You shouldn't joke about it anyways. It's pretty gruesome and it's quite a reality check could happen to a lof of people, especially the ones around here.
Dude, where his head is sitting beside his lap, only half of it's there. There's no face (well, if I remember right its the face side) and next to his head, next to his arm is a big pink oval, sitting in a pool of goop. Most of us like to call that a brain. Who knows? maybe it wouldda stayed where it belonged if he hadn't been a dumbass on a public road.

I'm 14 and I just saw the pictures. I've been completely distubed. You guys have no idea how bad I feel right now. Thoe pitures have just scared me outa street racing completely, and posiblely circuit racing as well. (when I'm old enough). I might even go so far as to get he biggiest piece of crap I can find when I get my first car so that I can't go faster than 60. Even when I'm old enough to buy and mod a car to do 170, I won't buy it. And I LOVE cars. I'm very depessed and disturbed right now it's not even funny. I do not want to go out like that. No one should. So sad....

DO NOT do that. A poorly built, bad-crashing car will mangle you just as bad at a low speed as a safe car will at a high speed. And fact is, it doesn't matter how good of a driver you are, because there can always be a pothole, or a couch, or an 85-yr old man stopped in your lane in a 45mph zone. (This is how I totaled my first car.) Your best bet is to buy the safest car you can, then be a careful, diligent, responsible driver. Crash-test ratings @ http://www.hwysafety.org/. Videos provided @ Progressive Insurance's site (http://www.progressive.com/RC/VSafety/rc_crash_videos.asp). Make SURE and watch the Ford F-150 video - you will never ride in one again. Compare it to the Toyota Tundra....
These ratings of course do not represent every real-life situation, but they can be a good idea of how the car protects its occupants. For each part of the vehicle rated "good" like chest, left foot, right foot, etc, that means the vehicle's interior (steering wheel, dash, floor, etc.) only moved in an inch or less for the upper area or 3 inches for the footwell area. In order to recieve a "poor" rating the interior had to move in at least 6 inches upper or 15 inches footwell. In some cases, it's the steering wheel that was pushed forward, which is scary. In the F-150 in particular, the brake pedal moved in 18". This is VERY VERY BAD, because, in an accident, where is your right foot? Usually stomping the brake as hard as you can. Basically if you were in that truck, braking, your leg would shatter. Scary.

Sorry dude. I gave a warning. I think that you'll get over this. It's not that big of a deal. People die everyday. You can be the safest driver in the world, then one day you step out of your car and get creamed by a bus. If you drive aggressively doesn't mean you are gonna die that way.
Lighten up..........yes it is a reality check for all of us. If you aren't hardcore enough to press on in your racing endeavors, then you probably should be racing anyways. It takes a special blend of brains to drive smart and bullheadedness to keep fighting no matter what.

I'm too young to race. And last night, I was kinda shell shocked cause I've never seen stuff like that before. When I said I'd get the crappiest thing I could find, I went over board. What I meant was that, for my first car, it would be better to buy something that isn't too powerful so I can learn the rules and ways of the road first. I'm sure you can all agree with that, right?
And I'll probably end up racing anyway, although, by the time I have enough money, hybrids might take over (20 years or so...). But only time will tell.
Fly rice, I'm over it. No biggie now. Just a reminder to be careful, and smart. It's all good.

I started out with a 1990 Honda Civic as my first a car to learn on. It was alright, but not enough for me. Then I bought a 1997 Pontiac Trans Am. HEAVEN!!!! It kicked. But It still wasn't what I wanted. Now I'm back with a 2002 Honda Civic. I love it. Its fun to drive and easy to modify.
Let us know when you are getting your first car. We can help you out on prices and stuff.
As long as there are guys and girls like the ones on this webpage, Hybrids will never take over. We will still be here to pollute the air with our illegally modified cars. Mine isn't illegal yet, but once I get me new header it will be.
Good Luck

Lol, have fun with that civic.
As for my first car, I really have no idea. I won't have to worry about it for another 3 years either. I live in NJ, and in my state you don't get your cinderella license till 17 and real license till 18. I prabably won't get my first car till 18 anyway. My parents don't want to buy me my car (I don't know why, they both do 6 figures, almost 7, a year) so I'll wait to make some good money.
