Factory CD player How to turn on Red flashing security light?

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado, Factory CD only. My question is how to turn on that red LED that is by the tuner knob. I think it is suppose to flash on and off for a theft deterrent when the truck is off. I have read the owners manuel and nothing is mentioned how to do it, which I am not surprised.

I am curious if there is some sort of code or trick to do this?

I'm not sure what the differences, if any, there are from a 2000 to a 2003 stereo or owner's manual, but I was able to activate my red LED by following the steps in the manual. It's listed under a topic about activating Theft-Lock or something like that. It was pretty easy.

There is no instructions included in the manual for the '03 Silverado. I just purchased one and the light in my stock radio/cd player doesn't light up either.

You'll have to activate the stereo's "Theftlok" feature. Look in your vehicle's owner's manual for instructions on activating Theftlok... you have to creat a code that has to be re-enterd when the stereo is taken out or power is disconnected. Save that code somewhere because you WILL need it later.

Activating the Theft-Deterrent Feature

the instructions which follow explain how to enter your secret code to activate the Theftlock system.
It is reccomended that you read through all nine steps before starting.

if you are unsure about doing this call your dealer they will walk you through the process for FREE

1.Write down any three or four digit number from 000 to 1999 and keep it in a safe place separate from the vehicle.

2 turn the ignition to ACCESSORY OR RUN

3 turn the radio off

4 press the 1 and 4 pushbuttons together. Hold them donw until --- shows on the display. Next you will use the secret code number which you have written down.

5 Press MN and 000 will appear on the display.

6 Press MN again to make the last two digits agree with your code.

7 press HR again to make the last two digits agree with your code.

8 Press AM FM after you have confirmed that the code matches the secret code you have written down. The display will show REP to let you know that you need to repeat Steps 5 through 7 to confirm your secret code.

9 Press AM FM and this time the display will show SEC to let you know that your radio is secure. The LED indicator by the volume control will begin flashing when the ignition is turned off.

Please disregard any poor spelling or grammer, I did not proofread it sorry

again if you don't feel comfortable doing this take it to a dealer, they will help you with this for free

Gambler is right. The radio which is a computer now knows the vin of your truck if you unplug it it will be locked and will require a visit to the dealer to unlock it.

The theft deterrent system is a feature on all base and uplevel radios. There is no need to program a security code into the radio as in past model years. The theft deterrent system now utilizes class 2 serial data to determine if the radio is in the appropriate vehicle. Each time the radio receives the "run" power mode message, it compares the VIN information it has stored to the VIN information received from a module on the class 2 serial data circuit responsible for transmitting that information. If a mis-match occurs, the radio display will indicate to the user the radio is locked. Once this takes place, a DTC will set, the radio will not respond to any button presses and become inoperative.

Hey,

I have a 2001 silverado and would like to update it to the onstar
system and factory xm cd changer indash radio. I can obtain many of the major components on ebay or junk yards. Can I put these in my 2001. What major components will I have to change. I'm willing to put a new wiring harness in the dash. Will the 2003 wiring harness work on the 2001? Can you tell me what other components will have to be exchanged? Anyother people challenged or attemped to do this?

Thanks
:eek7:
