I have the same problem with my 2000 Sport. My dealer says it needs an updated main control and seperator plate per Technical Service Bulletin 03-19 which would cost me $800 or so. It hasn't gotten much worse over the last 15,000 miles. I'm still looking into it.

A question of semantics. What is a four speed with overdrive. The good news is the bad news. The 5R55E has a number of valve body problems like the A4LD had mechanical OD problems. At least you can fix these without pulling the tranny. Because of bolt spacing, this transmission is prone to blowing out valve body gaskets. It is almost certain that if you drop the pan that you will find loose valve body boltsbecause of gasket shrinkage. This will eventually blow out the gasket between passages. Problems usually show up in first and OD. I bought a spare '99 tranny with only 52K and this problem. Only takes a light hand twist on the bolts 9 ft-lb. This also includes the cover for the low/reverse servo that blows out a gasket. The EPC bracket is known to crack and there is an updated EPC solenoid. Gaskets should only be obtained from Ford because some require an updated seperator plate. $800 is about the right price but is overkill if you just need the gaskets. The price of being in a society where no one knows anything and mechanics are just assembly line parts replacers.
