Car too hot

My Taurus wagon strains to get cool. AC has been recharged so air is moderately cool at the vents but cool air is felt only about a foot into passenger compartment. Car has automatic temp control feature. Don't know if retained heat in vehicle is because of anemic air conditioner or if there is just too much solar gain from all the window area. Had a similar problem with an Aerostar.
