what is the difference in appearance if someone were to use primer before spraying?

for some strange, mysterious reason, a car looks better if it has primer on the body before its painted :D

uhhh
u can't tell if it has primer or no primer
the top coat will cover the primer anyways..

integra818 sniffs too much plastic cement :flipa:

it doesn't look better because it has primer to stick to

paint will stick to the plastic, but not as well as it'll stick to the primer.

appearance wise, there's no visual differences.

SO YOU'RE THAT PUNK THAT LOOKS THROUGH MY WINDOW WHEN I'M MAKING MY MODELS!!!

The first post I made was done as kind'of a joke, I know about the primer and I know what it's for :finger:

If you don't think primer makes a difference, wait till you see my old kits( without primer) and new kits( with primer)

how about more pics?

seeing one kit and seeing another with primer doesn't give me any proof that a model used with primer will give better results in the final appearance..

there's so many factors that can be taken into consideration, you can't isolate it to just being the primer is what makes the paint look better..

maybe u just had a lucky break and the paint settled very nicely.

Primer just lets your topcoat stick better, instead of trying to stick itself to smooth plastic.

so, unless u can give me facts and figures, i don't believe!! :frog:

SInce I found out yuo have to use primer, I have painted one body with primer before paining it, and it is the best paint job I've ever done, and the color seemed alot nicer that a model my brother made with the same paint without primer

Not wanting to start a flame war (*HINT HINT*!!!! :p ) but I do believe that primer does make a HUGE difference. It fills in any minor imperfections in the plastic, helps with flash, and leaves a nice even colour to begin the spraying on. And if you undercoat a model in Grey, then paint it red, it is going to come out a different shade as if you undercoated the red paint with white.

Ask Pman, Guiddy I have heard both of them say that "primer is a must"

Now that I hope that I have gotten that out of the way, as it is getting off-topic, lets get back on-topic! :finger:

dood, primer won't make ur paint job nicer

so you got lucky, maybe the air temp was right, the humidity, the distance from the model u were painting... etc.

the only thing you'll probably notice is the color of the plastic doesn't bleed through some paint..

I TOO have painted models with and without primer
without primer, same dilly, except i can see the body color of the plastic from certain angles.

and it's not the primer that makes the paint nice, it's how it's FINISHED.

As for getting back on topic : NIce EVo!!! :)

Back off topic..
Well i admit, pman and guiddy do nice work, but because someone says that primer is a must, doesn't mean didly squat.

Sure it does help the paint to stick better, maybe useful when polishing out the paint or something. Oh and it gives u a barrier coat to the plastic so some paints don't etch into the plastic rendering it non-stripable, and gives u either a grey or white or whatever color to put ur topcoat on, so the color of the plastic doesn't bleed through when your using more translucent(is that the word? it's 3am and i'm doing my hwk:)) paints.

Other than that, what else can primer do, it does not chemically alter the top coat u put on,and it doesn't smooth the paint out for u, it doesn't enhance the vividness of ur topcoat.

so blah, no flame war here, just an informative discussion.

In all this, how could Integra818 tell that he hasn't used primer?

The whole idea of primmer IMO is to give the paint a good surface for the top coat of paint to stick to and also it helps to find any "mistakes" on the body like seem lines etc etc you may have over looked. Also after sanding it helps to fill in all the very tiny tiny marks left from sanding....therefore giving you the smoothest possible surface to apply the top coat.
Alot easier to sand primmer then a top coat

Maybe

If I use grey primer under yellow paint, it will make the color darker right? I can't find white primer anywhere, I baught a can of semigloss white but the color of the body is already semigloss white so...

What if I sand the body with 600 grit sandpaper, which I have already done, will that substitute primer?

you can try and smooth the body out enough by using higher grit 1000-2000 before you paint, but who knows if the paint will stick :)

2 Those not convinced about primer: Take 2 bodies; prime one, don't prime the other one; paint both with some duplicolor auto paint; observe the results. Primer isn't MANDATORY but it can make a HUGE difference ;) Just voicing an opinion:cool:
