Rear disk brake - 95 Contour

Hi Everyone,

I need some advise on how to compress the pistons on the rear disk brakes. I have opened the bleeder value and press hard - doesn't budge. I notice some rust on the end of the piston. Also, I noticed 4 round depressions and one small hole - what are these for?

This car has low mileage and set for a long time unused. Could the pistons be frozen in the cylinder? If so, how do I free them?

IIRC, (and if the 95 calipers and the same as later models) you need to turn the piston to compress it, counterclockwise I believe. You should be able to use the tips of a pair of needle nose pliers in the indentations in the piston. If not, Autozone/Advanced should have the tool.

Remove the screw plug that covers the adjustment gear on the back of the caliper. Turn the gear counter clockwise with an allen wrench to retract the piston.

After you put in new pads turn the adjustment gear clockwise with an allen wrench until the pads just touch the disc. Then back off 1/3 turn , then reinstall the screw plug and tighten it.
