Make sure the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir is topped up. There's a sensor on the side that reads the fluid level and will trip the light if the fluid level is too low. However, if you have 4-wheel antilock brakes (I'm not sure if the 96 was available with only rear-wheel antilocks but I think it was) and during the brake work you disconnected the ABS sensor or somehow dislodged or damaged it, you'll trip the system. Go over it carefully because it's probably $40 or so to get a replacement sensor and there's no fix if it's damaged other than replacement.

Top up the fluid level and see if the light goes out, then jack it back up and check to see if something happened to the sensor if you need to. If you only have rear antilock brakes than the fault could well be a blown sensor at the rear diff and that's an easy fix and should run you about $15 or so at autozone/advance auto.

Good luck!

Go to Auto Zone or advanced and ask them to remove the codes. I've had to disconnect the battery ground before to get the light to go out. Make sure all wires are connected on the front wheels.
