Just a little engine help

I have a 95 Wrangler 2.5. I know that the engine was replaced about15k ago.
The temp guage does not work and I believe that the guage wire is hanging loose near the firewall. Problem is, there is no sensor there to connect to. Was there any year ranges that there was no sensor at the back of the engine and would I be ok with a mechanical guage. The sensor at the front near the TStat is connected.
