Do you have the owner's manual? All recommended fluids are listed in the manual.

I have been running Rotella 15W40 for at least 12 years in my "89" it currently has 150k on it and uses about a quart every 3000 miles

yep sounds good, drive the car up on a good set of ramps, apply the e-brake, go inside and let the car cool off for a while, then get undeneath remove the trany pan and yank out the older filter swap in the new filter and clean the pan good while its out, brake cleaner works good, make sure the magnet on the oil pan is cleaned really good, it should have alot of little metal particals attached to it, will probably look like grease, just clean it really good with a cloth towelet before you put the pan back on, it doesn't take much to tighten the bolts on the pan so don't go super hard or they will crack, its best to let the car cool off for a good 2 hours before you start working on it or take the pan loose to prevent the bolts from cracking, on the trany bellhousing they have a rubber grommet that protects the torque converter from getting dirty from road dirt rain etc.. remove that rubber peice, it pops right out will be kinda hard but it does, you may need to persuade it with a flathead screwdriver its located right on the bellhousing so it shouldn't be hard to find, get some one to tap the car over until the bolt on the torque converter is facing down, im not sure what size bolt it is but once its down and you can get to it with a socket and an extention take it out, the torque converter holds 3 1/2 quarts so be sure you drain it or else you'll be overfilled. REMEMBEMER its better for the trany to be a little underfilled than a little overfilled.
first put in 9 quarts, let the car get up to operating temperature and drive it a good 5-10 miles, bring it back home, park it on a flat surface and let it idle in park for 5-10 minutes, then check the trany dip stick, should be right underneath the hot full mark. If its not add just a bit, but whatever you do don't overfill it, If its right before the hot mark its fine, don't try to get it perfect or else you will overfill it, then you'll have to remove the trany cooler line and drain it if you do so be careful.
btw if the trany has more than 100k miles i'd advise not to change the fluid, unless it has been changed regularly (every 2 years) or if the fluid is still a red color and not brown.
if it does have more than 100k miles and you want to change the fluid, your going to have to substitute at least 30% (3quarts) with an additive, lucas transmission fix works great but its a little pricey, well enjoy
if you have any other questions just go ahead and ask
