Could anyone tell me how i know what tranny goes into my 95 chevy half ton. it is a 5.7 350 4x4. Does one of the digits in the vin tell me or what. i ask around and some say it is the 4l60e but some say its not that GM only made the tranny specific for that year.
Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure that 95 had the 4l60e which is just an electronic 700r4 from older models. 94 was the first year for the 4l60e in pickups. As for someone saying that particular year had a specific tranny, you can ignore that. GM started using the 700r4 in the early 80s which was a piece of junk. But it got better and in 94 became electronically controlled and named it the 4l60e. I know that my 03 silverado has the 4l60e but the newer ones might have a heavier duty version of it.

Ok but were there two different trannies that GM put into the 95 silverado. possibly a 4l80e

1995 half ton with a 350 (5.7) will have a 4L60E. There are two different models of the 4L60E - I believe 1993-1995 and 1996-newer. The later ones have a PWM controlled TCC, the earlier ones do not.

The shape of the pan will tell you what you have.
See http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cd/0009.asp
The VIN does not tell you what tranny you have.
The SPID sticker probably has the RPO code for your tranny; however, I do not have the manuals in front of me to look it up.

4L60E would be M30 on the RPO/SEO decal.
