2000 sportage intermittant starting problem

recently my sportage has been having some starting issue(s). sometimes it will fire right up and sometimes it may require 6-8 attempts. the starter motor always spins fine, so what is up?

Starting problems are often related to sticky idle control valve: remove and clean.
