94 camry - sounds like a muffler problem.

Hello, So my car sounds like tghe pipe betweenthe engine andthemuffler has rusted out. It is real noisy. The wire mesh looking piece on the pipe appears to be rusted through. It is not firmly attached.
My mileage has gotten progressively worse and the trouble codes are 25/26/71 (or 72 - can't remember).
Any ideas? Any estimates on a cost for a fix? Any help would be appreciated.

I had the small flex screen portion of the exhuast system on my 1994 XLE replaced for around $100 at a muffler shop. This won't solve your engine codes, just the noise.

Code 25/26 is an air/fuel ration problem. Anything that effects that will drag your mileage down. Our previous posts talk to it.
Looks like your best bet is as GSS123 stated. Try to find a shop that will change just the flex portion (wire mesh) of that pipe. If I recall correctly that length of pipe the flexible section is in is pricey to replace.

I just today priced replacing that flex pipe on my 94 Camry 4 cylinder. I have used an independant muffler shop for all my exhaust system needs for over 20 years. He has always been vary fair with me. He quoted me $125 for parts and labor, but said mine is just starting to go and I could drive it a little longer if I desired. Exhaust system work is something that I never tackle myself. Working on my back under a car with a torch is just something that strikes me as too dangerous and not worth the risk and aggravation.
Your trouble codes are not related. Download and check the generation 3 Toyota Camry factory service manual stickied at the top of this forum for identification of those codes and their possible causes and troubleshooting information.

Thanks guys. As far as the code problems, where do I start looking? I checked the vacuum hoses and they don't seem to be at issue. I haveregularly cleaned the throttle body (last 6 months) and can'timagine it would be that. Not sure how to properly clean the egr valve (not sur if that is the right name for it....has ports p,q,&r). I think one of my o2 sensors was replaced (have to look that up). Theother code, the 72 (or is it 71) that relates to the EGR system hasme stumped. Just learning now how this system works. The manual isn't very intuitive to me at the moment. What typically breaks down in this area, and why? Old age? corrosion? dirt? Any help is appreciated.
I feel the same way about a blow torch and a gas line somewhere in the vicinity.

This is the procedure for testing the EGR system. Got this from the Factory Service Manuals thread at the top of the forum, as I requested you look at in your previous thread (30 June). You'll need a meter and vacuum gauge. Typically it's the EGR valve itself but, not always. There's also the modulator, vacuum switching valve, and tubing. Many times the pathways anywhere in the system get clogged with soot.
