Well, at my dads, my home-build rig:
Shuttle AK31A mobo, VIA KT266A chipset; basic, but solid performer with lots of tweaking options.
256MB Kingston PC2100 DDRRAM, running at CAS2
56K modem
Sis 315 vid card (sucks ass, will be getting a new one sometime, probly a GeForce4 Ti4200SE, or maybe an FX)
AMD Athlon XP 1800 Palomino
MAxtor 80gb 7200rpm HDD
Aopen 12*10*32 burner
Win XP Pro.
At my moms:
Proteva OEM, 1.2ghz AMD Athlon (at 1.32 OC), 256mb sdram, high speed internet running through a dedicated linux firewall (a 266mhz celery). 60gb hdd (the 40gb failed, the RMA'd me a 60!). WinXP.
And in my Bros room, i got a P3 550 for free, with 192mb RAM. 9gb hdd, works good for MSN and such, and keeps him off the good one. See, me giving him that comp did help me:D

Well, there are motherboards out there that have the ability to take 2 or more CPU's. The chipset on the motherboard then takes the work that needs to be done, and splits it up. This allows for faster processing. His dual 450 is probablyabout the same as a single 700.

no I got them for like $250 -$300 on some website. I love them the only thing I have a problem with was I got the 4.1 and not the 5.1 because the center channel was like $150 more, now I want a center channel

Seems like a great system self, except, is that the 9500Pro, or nonPro?
Also, why just one HDD? U should really put 2 of em in a RAID0 array (get 2 80's or 100's if u need to save money), as the HDD is often the biggest limiting factor, and RAID doubles the speed, the difference is extremely noticeable.
And $ilverbullet, get yourself a better HDD, because the difference in speed is amazing. I went from a 10gb to an 80, and I was blown away.....

My beast:
AMD 1800 cpu (comp only recognized it as 1.5 ghz and i was too lazy to bother with settings...)
256 mb DDR ram (not enough)
Old ass TNT2 vid card :(
POS Compaq Presario 15 inch monitor :( :( :(
10 gb hd
old ass CD rom
I bought a new motherboard and processor and ram and needed to throw it all together so i used some old stuff that was lying around...
It will be way better when i start working again.

current computer: dead. HA! it WAS an IBM Aptiva with a K6-2 450mhz and a voodoo 2. Oh yeah. Can't beat the voodoo.
But my new computer (which is anywhere between Sacremento and here, being UMass) is an MSI Ultra SR something mobo, with an athalon 2000+ cpu, geforce 4 4200, soundblaster 5.1, and a seagate 60gig hd. the other important paorts are being cannabalized. so i built this new computer for a mere $475. Not to shabby, methinks.

what the heck you doing with 2 gigs of memory???
can you say overkill? you could have saved the money and bought a 3.06Ghz with Ht instead paire that with a 1 gb of mem and you still would not use all the memory.
also ti46000 instead of a Geforce Fx cuz that is second best??? if you want to be cutting edge you should have gotten a radeon 9700 or waited for the new 9800.

Well you need at least 1 mem stick in each bank to get the effects of dual channel drr. I was going to buy 2 stick of 512. My supplier gave me a deal where the extra 2 only cost me about $120 more. I'll use them somewhere else later but for now that is where the reside.

well that makes sense if you got a special deal but i would still have chosen a radeon 9700 i mean if you had the money for a FX you could have afforded a 9700.
also have you though about striping your drives i mean if you have two identical ones why not. Although now that i think are there any raid controlers for serial?

ME is terrible, it always crashed on me, it sucked. XP is much better.
I do hope you have your hard drives in a RAID 0 if you have a raid controller and 2 identical hdd's :S

:p xp is the best IF your machine can handle it- if you dont have 256megs or memory or 700mhz processor then forget it- me is ok cause it has that "go back " feature, but xp is worth the learning curve-just make sure to get win xp drivers for everything before u upgrade! (and software too)

XP is great if you don't have older equipment to hook up. I have a Cannon digital camera that will not work when I have my scanner hooked up. Cannon knows the problem, but is not planning a fix:( I ended up buying a card reader, only $10.

has anyone had problems with getting programs to work with xp? ive had it for a while, but i didnt want to install it. i use alot of encoding and recording programs for music and movies, and from what ive seen they are all 98/me/2000 compatible. i know i can get drivers for all my hardware, but would i need all new software for xp. and a friend of mine told me that the version of windows coming after xp will again make previous software obsolete, is that true?

Yes I have my drives in Raid0, The RAID controller is built into my motherboard. That's why I bought the 2 serial ata's. As far as the ATI Radeon I hate ATI I've had bad expirences with thier products. I will never buy an ATI product even though I think it's better.

i've benn an ati boy for quite a while now including their bad days. Its true their drivers used to be quite problematic but all that is fixed now. Guess thei listened to all the complaints. Btw even john Carmack recomends the new radeon 9700 and he is very nazy about videocards.

I have an ATI 8500DV and haven't had a bit of trouble with it(knock on wood). I really want to upgrade to the 9700 b/c it is one of the best if not the best. As far as using older software with XP, it has an option built in to where you can set your settings for software to run as say Win98. I can't exactly remember how to do it at the moment but I have used it and it worked fine. I really like XP but am going to have to reformat sometime in the near future, b/c I have some sort of virus and it will not recognize any windows updates and windows explorer at times crashes. Never did it until Norton discovered a bug(which it for some reason can't precisely locate). Oh well computers are problems waiting to happen.:D :p
