Velocity Stalks?

Trying to cook up ideas for velocity stalks for a project.
Any ideas/suggestions besides buying a set or fabricating my own on a lathe/mill?

I read somewhere about "eyelets" at the local scrapbook shop, but couldn't find the thread I read it in.

Even with a lathe (this is actually something that can be done without a mill) it's not an easy straightforward thing to make. Making one is easy, but making 6 or 8 identical takes some thought and work.

Check out Stevenski's Super 7 build (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=680549) for an easy, great looking solution.

The items Stevenski used are uninsulated bootlace ferrules, and should be available from most electronics stores

I've had great success using just the taper tool from a car brake pipe flaring kit. I cut alloy tube overlength, tape the tool head to my vice jaws and gently squash the tube and taper piece together in the vice. If you make sure the tube and tool are dead square in the jaws and are very careful at applying pressure, very good results can be had. The other end of the tube tends to distort (hence it's left overlength until the flaring's done). Key to a good finish is to sand the tube end to be flared after cutting and then polish on a rag with Autoglym etc. This seems to let the tube slip over the tool better and not split. I can only get about a maximum 45 degree flare with the tool I have but these have been fine for the cars I've done. Big rolled flares (as on later Cossie DVA's/bikes etc.) are a no-no though!

If you can't get such a tool I reckon you could try brass countersunk woodscrews. Cut the screw say 5mm after the countersunk head and shoulder meet - the shoulder should guide it into the tube and onto the flare.

Good luck.

A guy I know came up with a system using aluminum tubing over a piece of bent piano wire chucked into a drill. He put oil on the piano wire and slid the piece of tubing up and down the piano wire with the drill on to work it into a flare. By doing it with a couple of steps he could even get it to flatten into a flange.

Cheers. Yes, it's one half of the trick Troy Trepanier Hilborn set-up. Still unfinished - as usual!

But why make do with plain metal stacks. Why not make them from carbon fibre ? :iceslolan
