I am replacing the motor in my 99 Regal GS.
I have a 3800 series II from a Riviera but aren't sure of the year.
Is there a way to determine the year from the markings on it.
The engine came with the transmission already on it.
will this fit in the 99 regal?
mine has different markings on it.
The regal has GM-B 24209508 with 911 on the casing.
The Riviera has GM-B 24204411 with 902S on the casing.
the block has 3800 series II on it so I would think it sould fit know?
Hope some one can help me.

Thanks.

does anyone know how to id the year of an engine and trans from the markings?
I have a 3800 series II engine from a Riviera and want to put it into my 99 Reagl GS, but I want to make sure it wil fit and work correctly.
What type of trans goes in these things?
I'm not sure of the year of the Riviera cause the guy at the junkyard did not know the year it came from.
Can you id it from the markings?
Is there a book or something I can use to id it?

To answer your question it depends on what year Riviera the engine and autotransaxle came from. Back to 1995 they came with either the M13 4T60E, MN3 4T65E and MN7 4T65E-HD. You mentioned you got a SII 3800 replacement engine but is it the L67 supercharged SII 3800 or the normally aspirated? Also, the L67 typically comes with the 4T65E-HD, GM RPO code MN7 which has a beefier carrier/differential. Also, the final drive gearing ratio may be different. The 4T65E-HD for the Regal GS has a 2.93:1 ratio.

bnaylor,

The engine I guess is a L67 because it is a series II with the super charger.
Is there a way to figure out the year by the markings?
Also you talked about the gear ratio. How do I know what is in the one from the Riviera?
Can I figure the year by the VIN #s
Thanks for the help.

I have no idea whether you can tell the year by the casting numbers. As long as it is a L67 Riviera with the Series II 3800 supercharged engine it has the same 2.93:1 gearing. Also, the tranny is a 4T65E-HD, MN7. From all indications the swap should work. Good luck!

BTW - The 10th digit of the VIN should be the year. See link below:
