back door won't open

My back hatch will open fine with the key but I cannot open it with the handle. If feels like the handle is pulling in like it should but it won't release the hatch. Any ideas?

You'll have to take off the trim panel and examine the latch to see if the plastic part that connects to the linkage is broken or if one of the linkage connectors is broken.
