Exhaust System Back-Pressure

I am just wondering how opening up your exhaust system effects your engine. I thought that a lack of backpressure was bad for the engine, and does it effect HP at all? I had a broken exhaust on my sentra the other day (right after the exhaust manifold) and the power curve was dramatically changed. Part throttle response was poor, while full-throttle was slightly improved.

Anyone want to explain the effects of back-pressure (or lack of it) on an engine?

Thanks in advance...
