problem just started two or three days ago. when i start driving i hear a squeak, when i apply the brakes a bit it goes away. when i apply the handbrake (lightly, not locking up the rear tires) it doesn't make a difference, so it's my front brakes. I'm thinking my brakes are rubbing, but i don't know if it's a problem that i should have looked at or if it's an easy fix that i can do at home. is it an urgent problem?

sounds like you're on the squealers....they make noise to warn you that its time to do the brakes, before you go metal-to-metal

i thought those were only supposed to make noise when you actualy apply the brake

no, they can do it either way. Depends whether the brake pad is pushed back when the brakes are released or not
The important thing is, the noise changes when you hit the brakes :)

All rotors have runout so you will hear the noise without applying the brake. Depending on how far the sensors are contacting the rotor, the noise might lessen with the brakes applied.
As a very short term fix, I've bent the sensors out of the way until I could get around to changing the pads. But you have to crawl under the car and probably remove the wheels, who works on their cars these days?

haha yeah, i would like to do my brakes myself but since it's a honda i don't want to put myself through it. i worked at a shop and apparently they're some of the worst brakes to change. i guess i'll just take it in soon

cutting the rotors are a pain, but if you're just doing a "pad slap" there's nothing difficult about a honda
