2004 Crankshaft Sensor

I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota, Engine service light is on, code identifies it as a crankshaft sensor. Before I purchase one, are there alternate areas that I should look at? such as a bad plug or plug wire. I was under the impresion that with a bad sensor the truck would not run. Any info would be helpfull.
