Yes, the motor mount needs to be removed to get the pump out. :runaround:

Yes, you need to remove as the motor mount as has been suggested. Also, you want the job to be as easy as possible, so remove as much as you need to to make it easy to access the area. Certainly the alternator needs to come out. I believe I also undid the bolts holding the power steering pump and moved it out of the way, but I can't remember. It will become more obvious as you see what blocks it. You don't have to remove the whole front cover (thank goodness), BUT if you are going to do this job, seriously*consider a timing chain and gears and cam magnet. Yes, the front cover must come off, but if it is needed, it would be a good time to do it.

I just replaced the pump on a '95 (last 231 before the Series II) and the front (right end) engine mount needs to be removed, both from the engine and from the RH subframe rail. The power steering pump and alternator can remain in place. You won't even need to remove any hoses.

Be CERTAIN that you apply sealant to the bolt threads for the pump (the longer 5/16" bolts) before assembling, or you'll be right back there looking for a "mystery" coolant leak, possibly into the oil.

When removing the engine mount, you'll likely discover why anti-seize compound is your friend.

I completely agree, but removing the alternator makes it much easier to see what you are doing. And yes, anti-seize is your friend. Use it!!:nono:

Oh, and make sure to break loose the water pump pulley bolts BEFORE you remove the belt. Trust me.:shakehead
