Can I replacement my flywheel (71' Chevy truck) without completely removing the transmission?

That would be like replacing the valve lifters without taking off the valve covers or intake manifold.
Since the transmission is driven by the flywheel (manual) or flexplate (automatic), it stands to reason that the transmission needs to come off by necessity.

You might be able to slide it back and leave it under the truck. The bellhousing can probably stay if it has the open bottom.
