Rear end rattle

please help!!!! there is a very loud rattle coming from the rear axel that sounds like two pipes clanging together when driving down the street. any ideas?

Check your exhaust system. What year, make and model?

On my 83 Lebaron, the rer shock bolt at top of shock produced a good rattle, just had to tighten it up.

From your discription it sounds like the sway bar, a round tube that runs inside the rear axle beam between the wheels. If you get under the car you can touch it from the bottom side of the beam. Push on it with your fingers and see if it moves. They break loose from the beam and ideally need to be rewelded. I always pull the brakes and weld them near where the original weld is located. Any compotent shop with a welder should be able to fix it.
