I have a 98 tsi awd and the transfer case is going out.
I called the dealer and gave them the vin. it had been in for the recall once but everyone told me I could get the recall again. well today was when the dealership told me to come in, and when I did they told me that because it had been in for the recall once before they cant help me.
talked to my Mechanic and he told me it would be around $1200 to fix.
what should I do? how has anyone gone though this? is it worth it to fix it on my own?
thanks

My best bet is get to know the garage owners around your neighborhood and when you need a favor they'll give you one... other than that, save money and get it fixed... or go to a junk yard and look for the part

Ok people, this is how it goes...

The dealer HAS to do the recal for the life of the car. It's law. If they refuse to do it, call the Better Business Beauru. They'll take care of it.

How do you know the T-Case is "going out"? The dealer is turning you away because it's showing that it has been done. But what problems are you having? That problem may not have anything to do with the recal, which is why they might be refusing.

I'll bet 100 bucks that when it was in for the "recall" before they just replaced the seal and refilled it. Now your tcase tailshaft housing/sleeve and driveshaft yoke are porked. Replace just one, and it will fail. Both need to be done.

If the tcase is porked, as in the gears and bearings, replace it. You can find them used for 100-200 bucks these days. If there is wear on the driveshaft get the yoke kit (see below) and do it at the same time!

If the internals are good, and it's just the leak and damaged sleeve/yoke, you can try what I did on my 2g. Replace the tailshaft housing, or just the sleeve. I didn't want to wait for the sleeve and arse about with pressing it in and out, so I grabbed the whole housing for about 90 bucks which includes it. It can be replaced with the tcase in the car. There is also a recall part number for the updated driveshaft yoke if you need it (inspect your current one for wear where it rides inside the tcase sleeve). It's about 35 dollars (recall parts are cheap, makes the recall loss numbers look better). I went on for another 100k miles or so after this work.

I personally would not waste time trying to get the dealer to do the recall. The NTSB should also be responsible for forcing dealers to adhere to all SAFETY recalls for the life of the car, but getting it done is going to be a long and drawn out process. Try it at your own liesure. ;)

Edit> A search may reveal a previous post of mine on this topic, from a time when I remembered more details about it, FWIW.

go to chrysler and tell them to do the recall. they HAVE TO DO THE RECALL AGAIN if it is doing what the recall is for. i checked with my dealer and they said no its been recalled, so i gave up. then i just for the fun of it called chrysler and he told me they HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN if the problem is what the recall is sopose to fix. tell them you called chrysler and they said that the dealer must do the recall.

if you wanna call chrysler, and have them tell you for yourself, then here is the number: The phone number for Mitsubishi is 1-800-222-0037, for Chrysler it is 1-800-521-2777 (or perhaps 1-800-992-1997). Canadians phone Chrysler Canada at 1-800-465-2001. The NHTSA is at 1-888-327-4236. (Note: Troy Davis reports that one of these numbers may have changed to 1-800-853-1403.)

the dealer should tell you that they will inspect and if it is the recall that is the issue then they will do it free of charge. but if they inspect it and dont find out the recall was the issue, then they might charge you a service fee of around 80 dollars. make sure it is the recall that is the problem tho, heres a link to some info on it http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q/

i got mine recalled last week and they replaced the yoke and the seal. my friend got his recalled about 5 years ago and they gave him a brand new t-case. let me know how it goes.
