Drop in a Small Block Chevy?

I've got a friend whose family runs a custom shop. They're building an aluminum V8 for his S-10 and he suggested that I put a small block chevy in my '94 Pontiac Bonneville that I've been having problems with. I've given it some serious though, and depending upon the reliability and cost (for both the engine and transmission), I might give it a shot. What should I do?
