Front End Pop

Lately when driving, I have noticed a popping sound in the front end. It only happens on the right side, and then only when I let off of the brakes during a left hand turn. A single pop, then no more noise until the next left hander / braking combination.

I'm going to assume that this is posted in the right forum and the vehicle is not a corolla or something with front wheel drive. So, I'm going to say probably wheel bearings are shot. Pretty easy/cheap fix. Jack up the front end and roll the tire and try to shake it parallel to the ground and see what you hear. If the bearings are shot, don't wait, fix it now or you are asking for an accident

Sorry, I didn't mention what this was on - 2000 Tahoe (New Body Style). I know that this is the Silverado forum, but there is more information available here than on the Tahoe forum.

I was thinking either wheel bearing, or possibly ball joints, just wanting more opinions before I get into the job. Thanks.

ball joints are notoriously bad on trucks like this. do this...get under the truck and look to see if any grease boots are dry. Poke a tiny hole in the boot of the tie rods and balljoints one at a time and test drive after each is sprayed. If noise stops then you have found your culprit. If not look at bearings or brakes.

OK, I checked for any noise or play in the bearings, found nothing. I also checked for noise or play in the ball joints. The lower ball joint seemed to have a slight amount of play, around 2mm, but no noise or anything else. Is this too much play in the ball joint?

OK, after finding movement in the ball joints, I had them replaced. The noise is much better now, but there is still an issue. If I put on the brakes while going straight and hold until I am in a left turn then release the brake, there is still a pop. Does not happen going straight or right or if I wait until I am in the turn to apply brakes. Any suggestions?

OK, an update. After the Ball Joints were replaced, I went ahead and replaced the Front Wheel Bearings and checked the Intermediate Shaft. The shaft looked like it had been replaced, I didn't find any problems there either. I can still hear a pop of some sort If I put on the brakes while going straight and hold until I am in a left turn then release the brake. This is driving me nuts. I have already spent a good sum of money chasing this one, of course they needed replacing, I have 260K on them (original parts).

Check the lower fender bolt. If it's not tight, the fender makes a popping sound.

Hope he finds his noise. Nothing worse then not being able to find an annoying noise..

I would say a form of brake clap. Grease your caliper pins and put some break pad grease on all areas where the brake pads meet the caliper carrier. Also dont forget to dab some grease on the steering stops.
