i was wondering if i could use a cone air filter running right of the intake manifold i know the sensor for the intake would not be hooked up and you would get a check engine light but would u get more air into the engine without all of the restrictions from the air intake pipe

youd be getting more hot air that way

your check engine light would only come on if you unhooked the sensor, if you just pull it out and leave it hanging somewhere, there probably wont be a CEL

also, there will be pretty much no performance gain by doing this since you will be sucking in WAY hotter air then you would be with your stock intake, you may even lose performance

i don't think the hood will close anyways, now cut a hole in the hood and put the filter there you will be ok, but i would recommend buying an intake or making one

There wouldn't be any performance gain. The engine doesn't suffer from lack of intake air so there is no need to "open it up". Unless you plan on doing some heavy modifications to the engine, you're going to end up having less performance because the computer will not be able to adjust your fuel ratio correctly. If we were talking about a v-8 with no engine management computer - and you had a good spot to pull in cold air - then I might tell you to go ahead with it.
