92 4runner speedo problems

Hi, my 4runner has had an intermittant speedo for a while and now it just wont work ,Occasionaly the O/D off light will flash at about 2 second intervals but only when the speedo stops working and not allways is it flashing.
How do you test the transducer and or the speedo in the dash
