They come in cans, bottles, metal keg, but why not a plastic 2 liter bottles? That would be awsome!

I don't know about the plastic part, I think soda tastes better in glass or metal containers. I can't imagine how beer would taste in plastic. I know some breweries, Miller for example, are experimenting with plastic bottles. I also think you'd get a lot of backlash from groups opposed to alcohol consumption and drunk driving, saying that putting beer in that size of a bottle only encourages more drinking= more drunk driving, alcoholism, health problems, etc. There always has to be some group out there opposed to something nowadays.

we sometimes get it in 2/3-litre bottles. Cider like Strongbow often comes in big plastic bottles.

i used to go throught a 3-litre bottle of cider in one night, get thoroughly pissed and pass out.

Can get em here, they're called riggers. Though it's usually the absolute shittest low quality beer you can buy.

I like nice beer in glass bottles.

The reason quality beer doesn't come in plastic (also known as PET bottles in the bottling industry) is the UV inhibitive properties of glass over PET.
Light and more specifically UV exposure in beer causes it to degrade, this is the reason most beers come in either green or brown tinted bottles, these color glasses protect the beer the best from the 'bad' light, brown glass has the best properties though.
Glass thickness also helps, that's why the high end beers always seem to come in bottles which are useful in riots and bar fights as they don't break easily ;)

So to answer your question, you can have your beer in a 2L bottle but it will have a short shelf life and will be cheap as dirt.

Most ballparks have your regular brand beer in plastic bottles.

I was just reading an article last week where Miller was experimenting with brown tinted PET bottles to house their beer. But currently it's color and design are posing problems for recyclers nationwide.http://www.grrn.org/miller_waste/miller3.html . Note the article says an expected shelf life of 4 months. I think it'll be awhile before the general public "accepts" beer in a plastic bottle as they are so used to glass and metal cans. It's like an American tradition. (Plus you can't crush a plastic bottle on your head like you can a metal can when you are finished with it.:grinyes:

The MIller switch to PET is old news to me, I first saw samples of what they were looking at over a year ago.
In fact I have some of the Miller sample PET bottles, they are thicker plastic than the regular Coke and Pepsi type PET bottles and also the UV inhibitors required in the plastic make it more costly to make. Also, due to the thicker plastic required they have a very strange base which makes them really hard to convey on bottling lines at the typical brewery line speeds (breweries typically fill at around 900 bottles per minute).
There is now an initiative in place to use regular clear PET for the bottle and coat it with a UV inhibitor ink which will be dyed the color.

One key reason Miller is looking at PET is to get more product sales in sporting events, it's a huge market for the beer industry and if they can sell bottled beer in plastic bottles they make huge grounds.

Also, using PET can mean that Miller can go to blow molding at their bottling plants as opposed to having to rely on a third party glass manufacturer as they do now, and the lighter PET bottles reduce in house handling costs significantly.

I was going to say, I could sweear I saw Miller in a plastis bottle. Maybe the midwest is their 'test market' since it's their backyard.

Holy snap, I'm posting in the off-topic area :yikes:

Oh yeah, 'cuz we're talking beer here :thinkerg:

I don't give a rats hiney what it comes in , hell they can start putting it in the Caprisun packets for all I care, so long as it's cold, refreshing, and damn fine tasint beer.

Coor light came out with the 18 pack plastic bottles a while back. They came in a cheap little cooler that was marketed towards beach people. The idea being you could put ice in the cooler and keep the beer cold. It was the same as drinking beer from a bottle, yet you couldn't take glass to the beach, therefor they were in plastic bottles.

Bonnaroo was the first time I had ever seen beer in plastic bottles. It was pretty bad beer, too.

Anyway, I think it should come in 2 liter glass bottles. Mmm...beer.

by the time you get to the bottom of a 2 liter bottle the beer would be all flat and gross from getting sloshed around. a 24 oz. is bottle the biggest i'll drink at a time.

there are 40's here and i'm pretty sure there are 80's somewhere around here. problem with these bottles, as mentioned before, is that if you've got one duct taped to each hand, it gets warm and flat before you get to the bottom. about 30 minutes away from my house you can get 40's of beer (cheap beer usually) for about $4-5.

I drink 40oz bottles of OE thats big enough. Tastes better in the glass bottle than it would in plastic though.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 2 liter glass bottle of beer. Would make for a nice challenge cuz that's a lot of beer to drink in one sitting.

A few years back I was thinking what it would be like say 15 , 20 years from now and one thing I thought of was an increased use of Capri Sun type pouches and aseptic packaging (drink boxes) to house soda and beer. They can be transported easily and would be the next logical step in the future of packaging.(Imagine shaking a Capri Sun type pouch filled with soda and then opening it!:eek: )

aseptic packaging (drink boxes)

Aseptic packaging is not limited to drink boxes, it refers to the technology and processes involved in filling the container, aseptic filling can be done in anything from tetrabriks to HDPE type bottles. Aseptically filled products are basically fresh fruit and dairy blended products which don't require constant refrigeration to maintain their shelf life or freshness.

If you want to see examples of aseptic products in bottles look up Sambozan or Fruit Simple juice.

Thanks for that info. I didn't know that the term "aseptic" covered so much ground. I thought it just referred to the type of package as a few years back our county , which has a nationally award winning recycling program, made a big splash in the media by advertising that they now accepted aseptic packaging for recycling. To this date on their informational sheets it is referred to as "aseptic" packaging and the words "juice boxes" follows it, so I gathered that the term primarily meant just that,"juice boxes." Well, I guess I learned my new thing of the day!(And who says you can't learn anything new here in COT?:grinyes:

Just a random comment, but we got some "cold beverages" after work tonight (being after 5pm on the Friday before 4th of July week)... and the topic of beer came up... along with the need for faster ways to consume.

That is all.

just bought a keg for canada day party tomorrow night, then i'm going to my grandmother's birthday on canada day (sunday july 1st) then driving back home and consuming more frosty beverages. a 40 of alexander keiths would really come in handy.... but a 2L jug would be even better, i wouldn't have to deal with as many empties at the end of the night.

Beer in cans tastes like ass. Why would I want it in cheap 2 liter bottles? The plastic bottles at the ballpark are bad enough.

At my house, you're guaranteed to drink out of a glass bottle or pint glass. No crap beer in my fridge.

Considering the boss was kind enough to foot the bill for the booze, I wasn't about to complain about drinking it slowly. Besides, it was COLD!!!!!! I would have gotten brain freeze if I bonged it!

I am not worried about that, if I'm doing that I'm going to have to take a piss before I get to the bottom, that is concern number one above what the beer tastes like...

Home brew can be done in plastic bottles, but they pose a risk; the pressure inside the bottle would blow the plastic cap off. That's a waste of beer imo.

Anything that's not pressurized and over 850ml goes warm too quick.

I'll stick to my coopers long necks... mmmm....

The best "big beer" is from a Stein - the thickness of the glass keeps it at a reasonable temperature. Usually between 500mL and 1L.
