Camshaft Synchronizer Replacement

I have my synchronizer, tool and sensor. I have a few questions. If I have my 3.0 manual 2001 ranger at tdc shouldn't the tool fit perfect right on the old synchronizer. ( I have it on the new one and there only appears to be one way for it to fit.) what kind of oil do I need to lube it with. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks
