03 Ion needs rear shocks

I got an oil change today and was told the rear left shock is leaking. Bought it new in 03 and the shocks have not been replaced in that time. Is this a project I should consider undertaking myself, or is it best left to the professionals? I have never replaced shock absorbers on a car. I got quoted a bit under $300 for them to do it, but I do not have the money for it right now, so if I can do it myself easily for the cost of parts I would rather.

Your thoughts?

you would need to buy a spring compressor and maybe a few other special tools, after that you wouldn't be saving much. i'd say wait or have the shop do it

I was replacing the rears brake shoes on my Ion yesterday and I studied the rear shock set-up. It looks to be a fairly easy job to do. Basically two bolts and the old shock will come right out. There is no need to compress the spring unless you have intentions of replacing that also.

I wouldnt even replace, if its not giving u a prob just leave it, mechanics will say it needs to be changed even if there is a slight leak just to get the work

True. If you're not getting wheel hop over bumps, the rears are probably fine. Bad shock(s) on a 2003 would be rare.
