thermostat location

i have a 95 vw passat gls vr6 and i cant figure out where the thermostat is on my car. can anyone help with this either by writing or where i can find a free diagram to show me? any help would be great. also i am going to takje it out and boil it to see if it still working... has anyone done this before??
