So my parents and I got in an argument the otherday because I wanna buy a piece of shit car for winter. So when I was coming home from school there was a ford festiva..under 500...well i used to have a ford festiva when i was 9 years old. It was the first car I had ever driven... It had a 5 speed manual tranny and there I was drivin it around in the woods at my land upnorth.. I needed a couple boat cushions to see over the steeringwheel but I managed. Anyways I have been looking for another one ever since I lost that one. I found one but they wouldnt let me get it cuzz they didnt think it was nessasary. I have a 92 firebird with a posi rearend. It gets shit for gasmilage...and insurance is hell on a 16 y/o. My parents think I am gunna continue driving it in the winter. Bullshit...1st of all...my car dont need all the road salt...2nd of all... Ill get stuck at a little intersection...even if its plowed...3rd...if I manage to get going...keeping it going ON THE ROAD aint gunna be fun...The festiva was gone the next day.....:banghead:...

Well, if you can't get a winter beater, here's my advice to you to get through the winter.
- Make sure the radiator is flushed out good and it blows hot air when the heater is on.
- Invest in some snow/winter weather tires, those make a big difference.
- Put some weight in the back over the rear axle.
My friend's brother had an LS1 maro with slicks that he had to drive during thw winter. He made it with about 80lbs. of sandbags in the trunk.

i didn't have problems when my 91 rs was my only car and driving it in the snow. good tires and don't lead foot it and you'll be fine. You right for wanting an alternate vehicle in the winter tho. I know for a fact that mine will never see snow again.

Go easy on your parents, they're just trying to look out for you... even if you don't see things their way.
If you have the clams to throw overboard for a winter beater, then go ahead. I just don't see a Ford Festiva being a wise option... anything that light isn't very controllable in the snow, etc. (speaking from experience, drove an 88 Cavalier, 95 Paseo, and a Mercury Topaz - they all sucked). Now, if you said you came across a 78'ish CJ7 with the 304 and a Dana rear in it that was mechanically sound for $500 THEN I'd say they were nuts for not letting you get it... but a Festiva???

hmm right now, for regular the price of gas just dropped to 3.20.. before that, it was just about 3.30.. premium right now was over 3.50.. O_O
cost of living.. hmm tipping is huge here.. GOTTA tip 20% on almost any service.. or more.. O_x and... hmm houses are hard to find/rent.. you can buy a normal sized house for maybe about 500K... the bigger ones go easily for a mil.. if you get ocean view/ private ocean(ish) itll go for easily more.. the house right next to mine, two story, medium sized is going for over 800K.. i think they just sold it..
but on the plus side, tap water tastes awesome. naturally filtered throughout the mountains, we got a giant resivour under our butts.. i think the natural tastes better than filtered here.. i hate how on the mainland/japan/etc.. it tastes like chlorine.
its always at least 70's when it dips below it, people get sick..and people wear big jackets.. :p
other than that, we dont have a fast speed limit.. our highest is like..65? (mostpeople go like 90 on that freeway..H3) yeah... cars rust crazy fast too
