92 town car problem starting/ running

i bought a bottle of super tech gas treatment and mixed it with my gas without adding fuel afterwards because i had a full tank. on the bottle it said to add to a full tank, thats all. thats what i did now the car has a hard time starting and when i try to rev the engine it sputters, misses and dies. it also tries to back fire:banghead:. i think the fuel treatment got into the fuel line before it was diluted enough. but i would like another opinion before i mess with it.

the engine had started to clatter a little bit when it was cold which it did about a month ago, so i added the stuff and within 30 seconds of starting the car it started doing this.

OK I'll bite... the gas treatments are harmless, improper dilution might cause some smoking but that will subside after it flows through.

I'm thinking something has worked loose after shaking the car to mix the stuff in the tank... so, what did you do to mix the stuff? Jump up & down on the bumper? <not very effective>, shove the rear-end side-to-side <very effective> for a minute or so.... ?

I'm betting your master (inline) fuel filter clogged, and maybe even the little filter screens in each injector as well. On some vehicles theres even a particle filter prior to the fuel pump.. this one could be suspect too if you didn't allow large particles to settle after shaking the fuel tank, and prior to running the fuel pump.

Some of this diagnosis would change slightly depending on the year and mileage, but I'm not completely informed here....

I would begin by replacing the inline fuel filter.

the gas treatment is for up to 20 gallons which is the size of my tank which was full when i added it. to shake and mix it in 2 of us jumped on the back bumper as well as shaking it side to side.i just put a new fuel filter on about 2 months ago or 700 miles back. the car is a 1992 town car with 118,946 miles. the car sat for about 5 years before i got it 5 months ago and about 2 months ago i changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, engine oil, transmission oil, engine coolant, and put a can of sea foam in the gas to clean out the fuel system becasue it sat.

Assuming it was running fine after you changed all those maintenance items, I would still say there's a good possibility you've clogged the NEW Fuel Filter too.
Shaking that tank and running the pump isn't a good idea.

If this is an older problem that changing all that stuff didn't cure, you might have to remove all the injectors to clean them out too.

well this afternoon i went back over to my friends house where i had left it. i thought i would purge the fuel line by taking the cap off the fuel rail on the passenger side and when i did all i smelled was the fuel treatment so i purged it 3 times till i smelled gas. then i tried to start it i fired right up. when i gave it some gas it revved up without trying to die. i was able to drive it home with no problems. now the car runs a little rougher at idle than it did before. so in my opinion i think that the fuel treatment got sucked into the fuel line before it got diluted enough causing the engine to not run properly. and i think i am going to replace the fuel filter tommorow if i get the time to do it.

Clean the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner. It can cause some stumbling sometimes. Its right behind the air box and requires a Torx™ security bit. #6 if I remember right.

That or you could file a groove into the Torx™ bit and use a flathead.

Hope you put a new fuel filter in....
