Awhile back I had intermittent problems with my Trailblazer. It was starting but the gauges and dummy lights were acting weird. If I shut it off and restarted it, they would be fine. Then it turned into a problem of sometimes not wanting to start - just not responding at all when turning the key. It turned out that the ignition switch was defective. It was replaced under warranty about a year ago. Now it is starting to show the same symptoms it started with last time with the gauges/lights.

No longer under warranty, I was wondering if replacing this was something that would be an average DIYer could tackle?

If it matters, it's a 2003 Ext w/5.3

You will need some kind of manual here and a very small torx socket to get the switch out, careful with the airbags also, only you know your limitations. Make sure this is the problem first of course.

Ok, thanks for the advice. Thanks for reminding me about the airbags too. Setting them off would not be good.

There is a little more top it than just getting a small torx bit....I have had my ignition switch out several times. It is a trick to get the housing that covers the switch apart, and DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING, unless you like little broken pieces. With a little finese, take the housing apart, and that will allow you to see the switch. Now, after the switch is out, DO NOT attempt to move the gear inside the switch. And if you have a new one, do not move the gear inside it. These things are set to match up with a gear in the lock cylinder, and if you move it, the postion will not be correct to start the vehicle. It can be set back, but it is a lot of trial and error.
