2001 Jetta wont shift out of Park

my daughters '01 Jetta wont shift out of park. When you press the brake the light on the instrument panel wont go out and the safety wont release the shifter. Is there a reset switch somewhere? Or will this have to be taken in to the dealer on a roll-back?

I had the same problem. When you start the car put your foot on the break till the foot light next to the shifter goes off. If it doesn't go off then take your foot off the break for like 5 seconds and try it again till the light goes off then that means you can finally shift it. I dont know why it does this it must be some safety thing.

The brake switch is probably bad. My aunt used to own the 1999 Jetta before I recieved it and she went through multiple brake switches. There should have been a recall sent out about it, I know I recieved a notice.
