93 Celica engine replacement?

My question is when replacing an engine in a 93 celica, is it easier to pull the engine and trans out as a unit then remove the engine from the trans.
or just pull the engine from the car and leave the trans intact?

and besides replacing the clutch while it accessable, anything else that need attention while I'm in it this far?

FYI, I'm going back with a used 1.6 motor, just trying to put together a car for my grandaughter, who just turned 16.
I've done many engine installs on rear wheel drives, just never tacked a front drive car.
