I got my truck all slapped back together after a headgasket blew. But now the truck is running really rough, the engine light comes on (code p0301, cylinder 1 misfire), and I dont know how to fix this.
The sticker on the fan shroud says its all automatically controlled as faras the timing goes.
So how do I adjust it? or can I even do that?
any help is appreciated

Dumb question but did you put the plug wires on the correct plugs so they are firing in the right order?

I couldve sworn I had it right. let me double check.

The timing is not adjustable.
But camshaft retard setting needs checked and set with a engine capable scanner.
If the miss is on cyl 1 check plug and wire.
Good hot blue spark to no 1 cylinder?
Look at plug or switch with another cylinder.
Check compression and pull valve cover and check rocker arms and push rods for moving right.

its got a good spark...
I might have to check the push rods... but Im pretty sure I put them back in correctly. I torqued them to specs as well.
Anything else I could check? And does it help if I mention that I did remove the distributor? I put it back in, wouldnt start, so I kept pulling it up and rotating it till it did fire. If I go 1 more notch in either direction, its dead again... so I guess its in the right spot.

The things I outlined in upper post should do it.

Go the basic test for cylinder miss first.
Like compression. good hot blue spark and makes sure valves are opening and closing and check for rocker arm adjustment to tight.

work related issues had me away for awhile.
I checked the spark, it was blue to #3 and #5, but orange to #1. So i swapped the wires and it stayed the same, so wires arent the issue.
I checked the spark to the ignition coil, and it was orange as well, so I replaced that.
now how do I check compression on that cylinder? and how do I know if the rocker arms are too tight and all going the right way?

Pull plugs and get a compression gauge and check one cylinder at at time while cranking engine over.
Your repair manual should lead you threw valve adjustment.
