2000 Camry wheeel studs

Well last night the BIL (Brother In Law) tried to change out the LF tire! Came back in the house and had broken 2 of the studs off.:banghead:
He said they were cross threaded but as I was the last person to work on rotating the tires I know for a fact they were not cross threaded. Even an impact gun will only run the nut down 3 -4 threads when cross threaded.
Any way my question is this. Can I R&R the studs without pulling the drive hub off? The BIL seems to think I can.
