69 RS/SS Camaro new engine probs

Hi all,
Just put a new crate motor in my 69 camaro.
New everything!
Engine doesnt want to start. Popping through the carb, fire sometimes. Sounds like a timing prob. Pulled #1 plug, confirm TDC. Dist pointing at #1 on cap. Pulled timing cover, comfirmed timing chain mark alignment. I'm aware that 2 timing chain dots together are #6 TDC, (weird that you dont read that in books btw). Timing is not 180 out.
This sure sounds like a timing prob...but everything timing related checks out aok. Plenty of fuel, infact..the plugs are too wet.
I hate to start replacing the carb (holley 780 dual feed vac secondaries), cam (CC 270H), and intake..when these things are new and not cheap.
Any ideas or thoughts? I'm really stumped, and am dieing to start driving this beast again.
I added some links to fairly recent pics of the car. I sold the BB blower motor awhile back. The SB is replacing it for street use in Calif.

Did you try turning the dist with the advance disconnected?

(holley 780 dual feed vac secondaries), .
That right there may well be the root of the problem. I've never liked Holley's carbs and the 780 was an absolute POS.
