Man cannot have girlfriend until 2010
Canadian Press
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. (CP) - A judge has ruled that a 24-year-old Peterborough, Ont., man is not allowed to have a girlfriend for the next three years.
Steven Cranley learned of his long stint on the singles scene after pleading guilty to several charges stemming from an assault on a former girlfriend.
Cranley, who has been diagnosed with a dependent personality disorder, attacked his girlfriend in an argument after their breakup.
He tried to prevent her from phoning the police by cutting her phone cord, punched and kicked her, and finally stabbed himself with a butcher knife when police did arrive on the scene.
He punctured his aorta and spent several days in hospital.
Doctors say Cranley has difficulty coping with rejection and runs a high risk to reoffend if he becomes involved in another intimate relationship.
Justice Rhys Morgan said Cranley "cannot form a romantic relationship of an intimate nature with a female person.
"That is the only way I can see the protection of the public is in place until you get the counselling you need."
He had already served 146 days in pre-trail custody, which Morgan said was enough jail time in this case.
Cranley's lawyer says the no girlfriend order is the first of its kind that he has encountered.

Creative sentencing is fantastic. Especially when it keeps people from being killed and/or maimed...

Those are the only holes that Canuck is going to see for the next 3 years, so best wishes to him!
That said, I wish there were more of those kinds of orders out there... it would protect the innocent.

you point it towards yourself and thrust it into yourself....
a butcher's knife isn't always a meat cleaver. http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&q=butcher+knife&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2
