Im going to be a senior in highschool
and art is my passion. Physics and Astetics are what i love
an i would be the happiest man on the earth if i could get an influental job position in the automotive design industry. I just started dabbling in drawing cars this year (ive only been doing it on/off for a bit). here is some of my recent works
heres a airbrush i just started (20-30 min in)
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/Shoku2/DSC00070.jpg
A c6 done on marker paper (45-60 min in, it looks really rough because i sketched it on the wrong side of the marker paper who knew the paper had an up side xD)
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/Shoku2/C6sketch.jpg
my favorite gt40 sketch (never finished it 2-3 hours in)
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/Shoku2/gt40sketch.jpg
i hear the automotive design industry is very competitive and is harder to get into than the nba so C n' C would be very apreciated and if anyone has any knowledge of automotive design please clue me in

if you have porptions down or fairly close
i found its just a matter of applying tutorials as well as using a photo reference. i learned to shade simply from trying to reproduce photos.

id love to see that gt40 finished. its looking really good.
the closest I ever came to automotive design was submiting body klit designs for a small aftermarket company. it really didnt pan out though so im pretty much sure that id be of little help. its my understanding that most car companies recruit through design schools. so that would probably be your best bet.

Great drawings! I'm in the same position as you are. Automotive design would be my dream job as well
Good luck, and keep drawing

That Ford GT is awesome! I like the detail.
I think artists are like musicians. There is a micro thin line between very talented amatures and pros. It's who you know in businesses such as these. I hope you hook up with the right people. Best of luck bro, you got the talent.

I am willing to pay for a paint design for my 3rd Generation IROC Camaro.
I've been building the car for the past two years and it's time to start bolting everything together along with match coloring parts (suspension, drivetrain, etc).
I am quite fond of Chip Foose style's, as they're crisp, subtle, yet elegant. I don't need an 'inyourface' look that will attract every Highway Patrol driver within 100 miles.
If you are interested; or know of someone who might be, I'm looking for a possible two-tone design with primary deep candyish blues & silver. My black on black IROC has the black T-top and has had the badging converted from the factory 'Z-28 IROC' decals over to some 'SS-Interceptor' subtle stainless markings.
Every two-tone 3rd Gen camaro paint job(1984-1992) I've seen looks ugly and out of place, yet the early camaro's look so excellent with split two tone colors and/or some subtle stripping. (please; no flames or big wide race stripes)
I'm not some rich guy with a loaded wallet- just a typical blue collar guy that's kinda color blind and dosn't want just a one solid color paint job (I spray my own to save $$$) Yet I know I'm attracted to every Foose vehicle he's put together on the OVERHAULIN' show and my other vehicles that I've painted have turned out to have more of an 'Eddie Bower' or European look to 'em!!!!
Anyone Interested????? I could REALLY use some help A.S.A.P.
Thank-You!!!!

Hey Shook,
I noticed that you are in the Bay Area. The Academy of Art in San Francisco is a really good Industrial Design school as well as fine art. I applied there but was ultimately turned down because, at the time, I was already out of high school for 7+ years and had no financial backing. According to them I needed GE credits to even be accepted at all. Unfortunately, I gave up and took a different route. Of course, there is always Art Center of Pasadena, which all you ever hear about is their Auto Design courses. If you can get into a reputable school like that then you will have a better chance at being successful than just going out on your own and trying to get noticed. The reason is, there is always a lot more to design than just drawing cars. I'll put it to you plainly; just because you can draw doesn't mean that you know jack about designing. It may sound mean and insensitive but it's true.
I have been drawing since I was 5 but that didn't mean that I would make a good Graphic Designer, but it did help. I went to school, got the degree and got hired right out of school and not because I drew well, but because I paid attention and worked my ass off and I took the first job to come down the pike so that I would gain experience. I'm still at this job and I still enjoy it most of the time.
If you're serious about becoming an Automotive Designer then pursue it 100% and prepare to spend the next 4 years of your life emersed in the automotive industry. It's a tough field to get into but you gotta be tougher to make it.
Good luck! I hope you do go after it.

Yeah, San Francisco Academy of the Arts have a good industrial program, but it doesn't have that great of a transportation design program like Pasadena Art Center does. I would of went there, I got in after high school, but the tuition cost for a quarter was a bit too high and I really couldn't let my parents pay the tuition for me each year, that's why I opted for Graphic Design. In a year at that school alone will cost me around $20k and that's without the art supplies needed per quarter. I'm willing to go there after I graduate from Graphic Design and hopefully pay my way through it. :D
Remember, think it through. If this is truly your passion, go for it, cause it ain't no picnic and it's hell of a not easy on your wallet or your parents. What Rothart said is entirely true, just because you can draw cars doesn't mean you'll be good in designing one. I got my taste of the real world when I showed my sketches to a Car Designer & Teacher at a art academy during high school. I was shot down. I didn't hate the guy but was grateful for being honest. I learned a lot in three months from him. Kind of regret that I didn't stay longer, but good luck out there.
With great passion, you will fly with colors. Try Pasadena Art Center. They have one of the nation's best Transportation Design course and most car designers are born from there. I mean, I have a fellow church member that has a older brother that designed the Hummer H2 and H2 SUT. Anything's possible.

what you talken bout AAU has great tarnsportation design classes there have been many of there concepts in carstyling and other car mags, i went there over the summer to learn and they had a whole building for industrial design which was consumed by car design. But to answer shooks question, you have to go to college to get into car design, car companies have reps go out and interview students who sign up for interviews, if you know someone from a design college you can probably find out how to apply, but one concern would be that you havent shown an original design, package drawing, concept sketches, all the stuff that goes into a proper portfolio. go to http://www.cardesignnews.com/site/designers/portfolios/ to see how portfolios should look like, (and some of them arent that good) but your really good though!

I am currently a transportation design student at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. A lot of you guys out there don't give a lot of credit to us. But the truth is, its better than a lot of you think. Our teaching staff is mostly current automotive designers for example, our department head is Tom Matano. The chief designer of the original miata and he is very well established throughout the auto design industry. If you are looking to go to school for transportation design, prepare to spend a lot of time in school and on top of that, you better work HARD.

Hi im 14 years old i would like to be a car or truck designer but im not too sure. At school im currently doing my gcses for art, i started my art gcses a year early and ive found out ive been entered in to an art exam in less than 7 months as an expected a*. I always liked the idea of a car or truck designer but i dont think ive got the inspiration. Soon however i would like to start selling drawings of cars and trucks to people, i am not planning on this for at least a year or more yet but it would be nice. Im good with drawings, i dont do much other things but when i buy some prismacolour pencils im wanting to start to do coloured pictures. I mainly do shaded drawings. i like visiting this forum there is some talented people on here, especialy Alex (stuffbyAlex). I will try and post some of my drawings soon.

Dude, I would be interested!!
I sort of emulate Foose's style and I have been itching to do something other than a Mustang, and how appropriate to do that with a Camaro!!!
Check out my thread I posted sometime ago with some of my work!
Here is the thread title...
Newbie here, thought I would share some of my work (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=753119)
Um, if you look through the thread there is also a link to one that I did for my Painter that is actually in rusted shambles. All he said was, "make it orange". And so I made a 3 tone paint scheme. Orange primary, black secondary, and a light silver pinstripe trim.
I think the Deep candy Blue as the primary color, silver as the secondary (or vice versa) and maybe an orange trim pinstripe to separate the to two colors would look AWESOME!! I would truly love the opportunity to do this for you. Please let me know if you would like to talk over the phone and discuss in person.

Shook_Design, You have some great sketches! It is obvious that you have talent. james_d this goes for you as well. I am a freshman Transportation Design student at Lawrence Technological University in Detroit, MI. I wanted to say to the both of you if you are looking at becoming serious automotive designers, LTU has a 4yr. Bachelors degree in Trans. Design that is a step above the rest of the design schools around. What makes LTU's program better then a degree from an art institute is a combination of many things.
You are going to learn how to design cars in the motor city capital of the nation, a plus. What sets LTU's program apart is that on top of teaching students how to draw we are learning manufacturing techniques and materials. Even if you are an amazing designer, but know nothing about how your design is going to be built or what materials would be best integrated into it then you are going to have problems as soon as you get a job. LTU is teaching students manufacturing techniques and materials so when we are designing we are keeping things in mind like how are these two panels going to fit together? Will these sharp body panels even be able to be manufactured? What else is learning Manufacturing materials and techniques going to teach you? When you get a job for Ford for example, If you can communicate with Engineers how your ideas will work based on material choices it eliminates alot of downtime going back and forth between engineers and designers redoing designs because there not manufacturable.
Were not becoming engineers dont get me wrong, we are through and through becoming designers, but having knowledge of manufacturing and materials science on top of design and sketching base you will come out of school with at least 4-6 yrs of workplace knowledge already under your belt.
I hope I gave you both some wise direction in your choice of design schools, and you both have great talent so take advantage of it! if Either of you want more Information you can look LTU up on the web at LTU.edu or contact me. Later guys
