shift knob

Need some tips on my friends 2004 grand am he have this problem that the shift cant put it on gears . the botton on the shift knob pop out. well i try it take the neg.- on battery then put it back then it works then after when he try it its not working again... so just want to know if its just the shift knob issue because of the botton pops out or theres something else? and how to take the shift knob out we planning to change the shift knob it might work pls help thanks

Though I have no clue what you just said.....
To remove the shifter on an automatic thiers a horshoe clip in the front of the shifter knob, a tiny screwdriver or something simular will pry it right out.

If its the manual then it should screw off or have a set screw I cant remember exactly :banghead:
