Multiple Gear Ratios in Reverse???

I'm a relatively new technician, but i've heard that on certain vehicles you can flip the output ring gear in the transmission and achieve 3 reverse ratios and 1 forward. Is this possible, if so on what vehicles? Thanks

why would you want that?
i guess that it is theoretically possible, but rather useless.
cars are pretty unstable in reverse. high speed can only make this worse.
the only possible use for this that i can see would be in a destruction derby car where the low gearing prevented speeds over 45-ish anyway and the two lower reverse gears were for extra torque.

note:
in a destruction derby, the ideal way to ram a car is with your rear end...
there is no engine to mess up.

You'll be able to flip the diff over in most cars. Of course you may have issues with it fouling other parts of the housing.

I'm not sure why you'd want to though.

that would be useful if you wanted to rearrange the drive train layout. there is a car manufactured by ultima motorsports (three or four models, actually) that uses a porsche transmission but the engine is installed ahead of the transmission (and it happened to be a large v8, i highly recomend looking at the gtr at ultimacars.com). i believe that i remember the webpage that featured the car referring to the transmission as being "reverse rotation" and for a long time i suspected that the ring gear was installed opposite of normal to facilitate forward motion even tough the transmission was oriented "backward." some pictures that i've seen of the smaller club racing cars built around the aircooled vw drivetrain were the same, the whole thing was turned around to achieve a more balanced car.
